Historical Event on 8/15/1947

India gains independence from the British rule and Pakistan emerges as a separate Islamic nation. Around 600,000 die in clashes during the subsequent population exchange of 14 million people between the two new countries.

1/8/1956Tryambak Sitaram Karkhanis, founder of 'Maharashtra Drama Group' (Maharashtra Natak Mandali), died.
4/30/1908Khudiram Bose along with Prafulla Chaki had planned to throw a bomb at a carriage supposed to be carrying the tyrannical magistrate Kingsford. Unfortunately he was betrayed and was caught and finally was sentenced to death.
11/16/1995The Pension scheme ordinance for 18 million Provident Fund subscribers takes effect with an initial corpus of Rs. 85.00 billion.
3/12/1930Mahatma Gandhi started Dandi March from Sabarmati Ashram near Ahmedabad to break salt law. This march stretched of 375 km. was covered in 26 days with 78 followers. The whole of India joined the campaign to boycott foreign goods and refused to pay taxes. Khan Abdul Ghafar Khan or Frontier Gandhi started Khudai Kidmatgar movement in the North-West Frontier. The Government went back to its brutal force and about 90,000 people were imprisoned within a year. In Peshawar, the Gharwal regiment refused to shoot a demonstrator. In Nagaland Rani Gaidilita, a 13 year old girl raised the flag against the Britishers and was put into life imprisonment in 1932. Nehru hearing this uttered A day will come when India will remember her and Cherish her. She was released after Independence.
3/12/1930Malik Kafur, Alauddin Khilji's Commander, won the impregnable fort of Devgiri. The fort was entered by the enemy. Raja Ramdeva was taken prisoner and sent to Delhi where Alauddin recieved him untill his death in 1312.
6/24/1897Padmashree Pandit Omkarnath Thakur, famous music director of Gwalior Gharana, was born at Gujrat.
12/16/1922Parvati Devi, orator, was arrested for delivering revolutionary speeches in meetings at Hapud and Merrut. She was the first Indian women to get two years long imprisionment during the freedom struggle.
8/3/1985Ramon Magsaysay Award for Public Service goes to Baba Amte.
4/18/1961Pamella Bordes, photographer and model, was born in New Dehli, India.
12/26/1986Consumer Rights Act was passed.
