5/28/1989Kerala diocese of Marathakavalli was the first Christian priest in India.
8/9/1942The Congress at its Bombay session passed the famous Quit India resolution, calling for mass struggle on non-violent lines on the widest possible scale, under the leadership of Gandhiji. He stressed that ""We shall either free India or die in the attempt; We shall not live to see the perpetuation of our slavery""; popularly known as ""Do or Die"". But before the Congress could start the movement, the government arrested all the major leaders and the Congress was declared illegal. Spontaneous popular revolts broke out with the battle cry of 'British Quit India'.

2/4/1974Satyendra Nath Bose, a noted mathematician, professor and physicist, passed away at Calcutta. He contributed greatly to statictical mechanics, the electromagnetic properties of ionosphere, the therories of X-ray crystallography and thermoluminescence, and unified field theory. Bose instituted ""Planck's Law and the Hypothesis of Light Quana"" in 1924.
11/1/1983Rajiv Gandhi, 48, who was chosen to succeed his assassinated mother, was sworn in as Prime Minister in New Delhi today. Across the Jamuna River, in a Sikh slum, evidence was found of the enormous political problems the new Prime Minister faced. The bodies of at least 95 Sikhs were discovered. The Indian army had also been ordered into nine other cities. Religious warfare between Sikhs and Hindus had claimed at least 1,000 lives since Indira Gandhi was assassinated. The security guards who killed her were both Sikhs. US Secretary of State George Shultz, who attended the funeral, assured the new Prime Minister of US interest in a ""strong and stable India."" 10/16/1905Bengal was partitioned by Lord Curzon on the pretext of it being too big to administer. Instead of dividing it on the basis of non-Bengali areas, the division was on the basis of Hindus and Muslims. Britishers thought that would succeed in increasing Hindu - Muslim tensions. The tremor of partition was felt throughout India and was regarded as an insult and challenge to Indian Nationalism. A movement was launched by the moderates. New method of protests 'Swadeshi and Swaraj' became the slogan of the common man and the whole of India was drawn into the national movement.
