10/28/1996Press Council of India to set up a 5-member committee headed by Chairman P.B. Sawant to inquire into the attack on journalists outside the New Delhi residence of Kanshi Ram.
11/2/1990Many die in firing in Ayodhya as Karsevaks storm the Ram Janma Bhumi/Babri Masjid structure. Curfew in many areas in north and west India to prevent communal violence. Several people die in violence.
6/19/1997Indian flag cargo ship, M. V. Arcadia Pride, sinks in inclement weather, seven nautical miles off Colaba, Mumbai, leaving four sailors dead and 20 missing. In the rescue and search operation by the Indian Navy, nine persons were rescued.
7/28/1914Japanese boat 'Kamagata Maru' was compelled to deport to India from Vancouver, Canada. The ship was boarded with active freedom fighters who were against the British Government.
10/10/1978Rohini Khadilkar, fifteen years old, became the first woman to win the national chess championship. Presently, she is the editor of a leading Marathi newspaper of Mumbai 'Nava Kaal'.
