Historical Event on 1/30/1948

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, the spiritual leader of Indian independence, was shot and killed by a Hindu extremist. The 78-year-old Gandhi was shot at point-blank range as he was walking through a garden to a pergola, where he was to deliver his daily prayer meeting.

3/4/1939Lala Har Dayal, revolutionary, nationalist and freedom fighter, passed away at Philadelphia.
1/4/1932Mahatma Gandhi and other members of his All-India National Congress are back in jail again. After the collapse of the London conference, British authorities cracked down even harder on Gandhi and his followers, and the Mahatma urged Indians to increase their acts of civil disobedience. ""Wake up from sleep,"" Gandhi said as he ordered a boycott of British goods. ""Discard foreign cloth. Discard narcotics. Discard violence. Defy all orders calculated to crush the national spirit."" The government declared Gandhi's Congress an illegal organization. Under new laws, even peaceful picketing is illegal. The Congress party responded to the crackdown by recruiting more followers and striking more plants.

7/18/1980Second Experimental launch of Space Launch Vehicle -3 (SLV-3) by Indian made 35 kilogram Rohini satellite (RS-1) successfully placed in orbit. It was used for measuring in-flight performance of second experimental launch of SLV-3. The launch took from Sriharikota and India became the sixth nation to put a satellite into orbit.
